Rumah Kayu

Menoedjoe Masjarakat Baroe, translated as In the Making of a New Society, was published in Djatajoe in July 1939, a community journal by Bali Dharma Laksana. Written during a moment of political uncertainty, it framed Bali as a crossroads between colonial legacies, adat (customary law and tradition), and emerging ideas of nationhood. Djatajoe explored solidarity through forms of organisation, perkumpulan (associations), perserikatan (unions), and organisasi (organisations), opening discussions on bangsa (nation), rakyat (the people), tanah air (homeland), and ibu pertiwi (Mother Earth). Women’s voices also emerged through groups such as Poetri Bali Sadar (Conscious Balinese Women). This session reflects on how vocabularies of renewal, solidarity, and awareness in 1939 continue to resonate with Bali’s social and political tensions today.

This collective reading session is a collaboration between the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, the Bali Archive and Repository, Penerbit Partikular, and Nuturang. The session will be conducted in Indonesian.

Menoedjoe Masjarakat Baroe, yang diterjemahkan sebagai In the Making of a New Society, diterbitkan di Djatajoe pada Juli 1939, sebuah jurnal komunitas terbitan Bali Dharma Laksana.
