Candid Enigma: The Artful Adventures of Andrew Hau Ewing

Maurice O’Riordan is an Australian-based writer and curator. He is a former editor of Art Monthly Australasia and has written on art for numerous publications in Australia and overseas since the early 1990s. His curatorial credits include Love Magic: Erotics and Politics in Indigenous Art, co-curator in 1999; Treaty, yeah?, a tribute to the late Dr Yunupingu in 2014; and Queer Territory in 2025. He has edited publications including Mookanunganuk: Selected Poems by Mooradoop Kathy Mills, published by Batchelor Press in 2020, and Gary Lee’s Keep Him My Heart: A Larrakia-Filipino Love Story, published by Dishevel Books in 2024. He founded Dishevel Books in 2023 as a platform for independent arts publishing. Maurice edited the imprint’s first release, Heat: Gary Lee, Selected Texts, Art & Anthropology, published in 2023, which won Best Art Writing by an Indigenous Australian at the 2024 Arts Writing and Publishing Awards hosted by the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand. He was a panellist at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in 2011, where he also launched an Indonesia-focused issue of Art Monthly Australia.
