Hilmar Farid

Hilmar Farid is the former Director General of Culture at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia from 2015 to 2024. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in History at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia in 1993 and earned a Ph.D. at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore in 2014. Hilmar’s research and work focus on history, culture, policy, and arts governance. In addition to his academic work, Hilmar has held various strategic positions, including Director of the Indonesian Institute of Social History, Lecturer at the University of Indonesia Postgraduate Program, Independent Commissioner of PT Krakatau Steel, Chair of the Supervisory Board of Perum Percetakan Negara RI, and, since 2020, President Commissioner of PT Balai Pustaka, the state-owned publisher. He also currently teaches at the Postgraduate Program of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts.

Hilmar Farid adalah mantan Direktur Jenderal Kebudayaan di Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi Republik Indonesia pada periode 2015–2024. Ia menyelesaikan studi Sarjana Sejarah di Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Indonesia, pada tahun 1993, dan meraih gelar Ph.D. di Fakultas Seni dan Ilmu Sosial, National University of Singapore, pada tahun 2014. Penelitian dan karya Hilmar berfokus pada sejarah, kebudayaan, kebijakan, serta tata kelola seni. Selain kiprah akademisnya, Hilmar pernah menduduki berbagai posisi strategis, antara lain Direktur Institut Sejarah Sosial Indonesia, Dosen Program Pascasarjana Universitas Indonesia, Komisaris Independen PT Krakatau Steel, Ketua Dewan Pengawas Perum Percetakan Negara RI, dan sejak 2020 menjabat sebagai Komisaris Utama PT Balai Pustaka, penerbit milik negara. Saat ini ia juga mengajar di Program Pascasarjana Institut Kesenian Jakarta.
