Yellow Coco Nest

Do you know which tree in your neighbourhood is the Mother Tree? It is the tallest and oldest, witnessing changes over many years and communicating through its roots and soil with other living beings nearby. In this session, Susan Allen shares the story of a Mother Tree in Nyuh Kuning. From the moment she moved there, she felt drawn to a glorious pule tree at the south end of the village, part of Pura Beji temple. Each day, she observes its majesty, the sun’s first rays on its leaves, branches, and trunk; its joy when rain arrives; and its quiet presence at night. Her curiosity led her to explore further through oral history interviews about the tree’s life and legacy. Through reflections, temple visits, and dialogues with the mangku and villagers, Susan offers a heartfelt narrative. Participants will then create their own Mother Tree puppet using shadow play, beginning a deeper connection with their local tree and story.

Proceeds from this workshop will support Pura Beji in Nyuh Kuning, helping to protect the land, the Mother Tree, and the sacred beji.
