A Night in the Amazon: Tales of Magic and Wisdom

Wade Davis is a renowned Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. With an impressive collection of 23 books under his belt, Wade obtained his degrees in anthropology and biology from Harvard University and earned a Ph.D. in ethnobotany. He served as the Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013 and was honored as a member of the Order of Canada in 2016.

Carlos Castaño-Uribe is an environmentalist, archaeologist, anthropologist and explorer known for his “discovery” of the World Heritage Site Chiribiquete National Park. For the past 40 years, Carlos has worked in the protection of biodiversity and traditional cultural wisdom. He has made many large contributions to public environmental policy in Colombia and Latin America. Carlos has received various awards for his career in sustainability and ecology, including the Dragón de Oro Medal and the Fred M. Packard International Parks Merit Award. He is currently Director of La Fundación Herencia Ambiental Caribe – a foundation based in Magdalena, Colombia that promotes peace and sustainable human development through the protection of the environment and natural, cultural and social resources.

John Pabon is an expert sustainability author, consultant, and speaker who has spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. He's authored two books about the subject, Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet and The Great Greenwashing. After leaving his job at the United Nations, he embarked on a journey across the world to study the impacts of sustainability firsthand in factories, nature, and some of the biggest corporations on the planet. With a mission to move sustainability from theory to practical and impactful strategies, he consults businesses and is a keynote speaker in addition to his writing.

Velia Vadal is a Colombian writer who loves the sea and shared readings. Her first book, Aguas de Estuario (Estuary Waters), is a work of fiction about a woman moving towards happiness in the black community on Colombia's Pacific coast and won an inaugural publication grant for Afro-Colombian authors from the Colombian Ministry of Culture. She was recognized on the BBC 100 Women 2022 list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. She also organizes the Chocó reading and writing festival, which views literature as a tool to fight inequality and racism and receives thousands of guests every year. A social entrepreneur and journalist, she is also the Founder of Motete, an organization that promotes reading and literacy.

Helena Gualinga is an Ecuadorian Indigenous advocate for climate justice and human rights, dedicated to championing the protection of the Amazon Rainforest and the rights of Indigenous people. Hailing from the Kichwa community of Sarayaku, she comes from a community that has steadfastly opposed the big oil industry for decades. Helena is a valued member of the Indigenous Youth Collective of Amazon Defenders in Ecuador. She has actively participated in several conferences, including COP 27 and UN summits, as well as the World Economic Forum. Most notably, she was recently honored with the DVF Leadership Award.
