20 Years of UWRF: A Reflective Celebration

Melbourne-born Janet DeNeefe, Founder & Director of Ubud Food Festival and Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, has lived in Bali for more than three decades. Her latest book is Bali: Food of My Island Home, following her memoir Fragrant Rice. She is also the owner of Casa Luna, Indus Restaurant, and Honeymoon Guesthouse and Bakery in Ubud.

Rosemarie Milsom is the founding director of the Newcastle Writers’ Festival, which celebrated its 10th edition in April 2022. Rosemarie launched the festival after a 20-year career as an award-winning journalist in Newcastle and Sydney, primarily with Fairfax Media. She is passionate about creating stories, and she founded the festival to provide Hunter region writers a venue to showcase their work and give local audiences the chance to interact with prominent Australian authors. She thinks Australian actress Hannah Gadsby put it well in her inflammatory performance Nanette: Stories hold our cure. Rosemarie is aware of the particular difficulties faced by artists and viewers in rural areas, even though Newcastle is renowned for its vibrant and resourceful arts scene. She is committed to helping break down barriers that contribute to their underrepresentation in cultural activity. She is passionate about working with other local arts organizations and believes that sharing ideas and resources has a direct impact on the health and vibrancy of the sector.

Kadek Purnami is an event planner, event management lecturer, festival observer, and culture enthusiast. She formerly served as the general manager of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and the Ubud Food Festival. With 21 years of experience in the event industry, she has successfully produced numerous events in the fields of art and culture. Additionally, Kadek is an accomplished short story writer, having published her work in both printed and audiobook formats. She holds a master's degree in Tourism from the Magister program.

Dwi Ermayanthi (Erma) is the Festival Manager and plays a pivotal role in the festival, overseeing all aspects and ensuring the successful attainment of our key objectives, while upholding the core values that define our event. With her extensive experience as a project manager in the cultural and art industry, Erma brings over a decade of expertise in working on various festivals in Ubud.

Toni Pollard taught Indonesian in New South Wales high schools and the University of Western Sydney for more than 35 years. Upon her retirement in 2004, she took up Indonesian literary translation, mostly for Lontar and the UWRF Annual Anthologies. In 2018, Pollard’s interest in Indonesian literature led to her co-founding Indolitclub in Sydney. Indolitclub is a monthly discussion group that focuses on bilingual texts and currently meets on Zoom.

Toni has attended Ubud festivals since 2004, sharing her experiences through email blogs. She’s turned her Bali notes and photos into an online web book Toni’s Bali Jottings, capturing Ubud’s festival spirit. Explore past festivals here.

Toni Pollard mengajar bahasa Indonesia di sekolah menengah New South Wales dan Universitas Western Sydney selama lebih dari 35 tahun.
