Pressure and Pleasure is published to coincide with a major solo exhibition of the artist, Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me (2022), at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN), Jakarta. This anthology explores the ongoing influence of the artist’s works and ideas on generations of artists and critical thinkers. Six commissioned writers, Eka Kurniawan, Erni Aladjai, Goenawan Mohamad, Mahfud Ihwan, Laksmi Pamuntjak, and Ziggy Zezsyazeoviennazabrizkie, develop new work based on a single artwork of Agus Suwage and create their own interpretations of Suwage’s works. The use of a creative writing approach instead of using art historical, aesthetic, or socio-political analysis will offer an alternative perspective on how to perceive the works of contemporary artists.
