Kathryn “Kitsie” Emerson

Kathryn “Kitsie” Emerson is a performance translator of Wayang kulit. She has been involved with the performing arts in Indonesia since 1991 and runs the Ekalaya Arts Center in Solo with her husband, Wakidi Dwidjomartono, a renowned Gamelan musician. In 2004, she began documenting the work of Dhalang Ki Purbo Asmoro and developed a method of simultaneously translating Wayang kulit from Javanese to English. This method can be done during a performance so foreign audiences who do not understand Javanese have access to the beauty and complexity of the art form. Over the past 16 years, she has translated Wayang on more than 250 occasions.

Kathryn “Kitsie” Emerson adalah penerjemah pertunjukan wayang kulit. Terlibat dalam seni pertunjukan di Indonesia sejak tahun 1991 dan mengelola Ekalaya Arts Center di Solo bersama suaminya, Wakidi Dwidjomartono, seorang musisi Gamelan terkenal. Pada tahun 2004, ia mulai mendokumentasikan karya Dhalang Ki Purbo Asmoro dan mengembangkan metode penerjemahan wayang kulit secara simultan dari bahasa Jawa ke bahasa Inggris. Cara ini bisa dilakukan saat pementasan agar penonton asing yang tidak mengerti bahasa Jawa dapat mengakses keindahan dan kompleksitas bentuk seni ini. Selama 16 tahun terakhir, ia telah menerjemahkan pertunjukan Wayang lebih dari 250 kali.
