A tribute to the mother: UWRF17 poster revealed

Posted: 15 February 2017

A tribute to the mother as the giver of life and all things, we are proud to unveil our poster for the 14th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, returning to Bali’s cultural capital from 25–29 October this year.

Created by local Balinese graphic artist and illustrator, Kuncir Sathya Viku, the poster is a powerful representation of this year’s theme, ‘Origins’. Drawn from the Hindu philosophy ‘Sangkan Paraning Dumadi’, the theme invites us to consider the biggest picture – to contemplate not just our connections from person to person, but as a collective humanity extending across people, the planet and periods of time.

An animal enthusiast, Kuncir loves to wander off in his own imagination. His artwork is drawn from Balinese sorcery script and outlines, and is grounded in Hindu mythology. “This year’s theme challenged me to dig deeper into my admiration of woman, where all things come from and to where they will return again,” he said.

In October, Kuncir will join the world’s leading authors, artists, thinkers and performers as they create the 14th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival through the lens of ‘Origins’.
