On the night of a full moon, Kalamai village is heavy with a stifling heat. Puti Mawarni opens her bedroom window to let in the cool night air, but the air flowing through the open window is even hotter. She looks to the moon and then something strange happens. She transforms into a white tiger and leaps about the window.
“The night was drawing in and soon the call to prayer would be heard. Atuk Rajo Balang had just got home from the fields; he had to be there at night to guard the durian trees because their fruit usually fell at night time. No sooner had he set foot in his house than he came to an abrupt halt upon seeing a white tiger leaping into Puti Mawarni’s room: her window was wide open.”
