There are growing concerns about the resurgence of autocracy and authoritarianism, often disguised as populist politics. Ultra-nationalist, racist, and xenophobic forces are eroding democratic pluralism and tolerance in many parts of the world. This trend isn’t limited to reactionary leaders; it has also become normalized within progressive politicians who have significantly expanded surveillance, curtailed civil liberties, and militarized borders, with little opposition. The fall of the Berlin Wall was meant to signal a clear triumph of liberalism over authoritarianism. However, today we’re witnessing the proliferation of walls, both figurative and physical. What has become of the promise of liberalism, and how can we prevent the erosion of democracy?
