“Clumsily spilling out sentiment here, there, and everywhere … I would tell my friends I loved them constantly.” Michael Pederson’s latest book, Boy Friends, is a tribute to his late friend and a meditation on male friendship. What are the norms of conventional masculinity and mate-ship? Would the world be a happier place if men were able to express emotions more freely? Nuril writes tragicomedy in the form of autofiction and creates subtly eccentric characters that often explore queer themes. Vamba Sherif’s novel The Land of the Fathers features Edward, a missionary who, during his travels, encounters an extraordinary man named Halay. Edward’s new and dearest friend is ready to sacrifice his own life to protect his country; Liberians believe that with Halay’s death, no war will ever threaten their land. Miles Merrill speaks with author Michael Pederson and Nuril Basri about the alchemy of friendship and how they have captured it in their writing.

Novel Vamba Sherif The Land of the Fathers menampilkan Edward, seorang misionaris yang, dalam perjalanannya, menemui seorang lelaki luar biasa bernama halay.
