Drawing from over 15 years of comprehensive research, Janet Steele’s latest book, Malaysiakini, presents an intimate portrayal of the individuals and issues that underpin Malaysia’s sole truly independent media platform. Emerging in the aftermath of Malaysia’s Reformasi movement, Malaysiakini was established by Steven Gan and Pramesh Chandran, with the intention of introducing autonomous journalism to the country, in the pursuit of transformation. Steele not only unveils the intricate dynamics of newsroom ethnography but also weaves a nuanced and vibrant tapestry of modern Malaysia’s history. The discussion will be led by Michael Vatikiotis.
