Film Program | Tradition Keepers: Ties to the Earth & Coming of Age

Follow the stories of personal challenges and cultural survival that run beneath the surface of Indonesia’s textile arts industry and into a world of rituals, ancestors, mythology, and ecological wisdom with the Tradition Keepers series. Ties to the Earth tells the story of a vine that connects heaven and earth and in Coming of Age a teenage Balinese girl is initiated into the unmarried women’s society and starts to learn the meaning of her village’s textile tradition.

Both episodes uncover traditional textiles that embody Timor’s culture. This film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Willy Daos Kadati, featured in both films, and the filmmakers from Asa Film. Jean Howe from Threads of Life will moderate the conversation.
