Shortly after he turned 33, Segara Alam started revisiting his journey from childhood to adulthood. All events were imprinted vividly in his mind. Thanks to his photographic memory, Alam remembered the first time he was held at gunpoint by an adult man when he was three; the first time his cousin insulted him as “a child of a traitor of the nation”; the first time he fought with the child of a business tycoon; and the first time he fell in love.

Leila S. Chudori’s latest novel shares the same universe with her 2012 novel Pulang (English translation: Home by John McGlynn). Telling the story of Alam, the son of a 1965 ex-political prisoner which was burdened by the ‘New Order regime curse’. A coming of age story about a young man trying to define his identity; whether he exists in a world with a historical burden on his shoulders, whether he could survive without a father figure whom he hasn’t had a chance to know.
