As Ubud Writers & Reader Festival 2021 draws to a close, let’s dive deeper into the thought-provoking discussions, screenings, and performances that we proudly present! Our night events and sessions, Music & ArtsBook LaunchesFilm Screenings, will highlight authors, artists, and other creatives from across the globe, online and on-site. Here are our 18 upcoming night events and sessions:

  1. Book Launch | Puandemik: Kumpulan Puisi Perempuan di Masa Pandemik, 14 Oct, 17:00 – 18:00

Streaming on UWRF’s Facebook & Instagram | Live in Indus Restaurant, Jl. Raya Sanggingan, Ubud

Puandemik: Kumpulan Puisi Perempuan di Masa Pandemik promotes female poets from various regions of Indonesia. Written from 2020 – 2021, the poems convey the feelings, thoughts, hopes, and views of Indonesian women during the pandemic. This collection of poems also promotes new women writers in the country. The book sales will be donated to organizations assisting victims of violence against women.

3. Festival Club | Ponti, 14 Oct, 18:00 – 18:45

Considered one of the most extraordinary young talents to debut in recent years, Sharlene Teo’s first novel, Ponti, was described by Ian McEwan as “remarkable,” praising the way “her characters glow with life and humour and minutely observed desperation.” Join her as she discusses her work and finding inspiration in the time of COVID-19 with Farid Hamka.

4. Film Screening | Lasagna, 14 Oct, 18:00 – 18:45

Follow the story of Mirna, who comes to prison with a lasagna as the execution of her husband, Rudi, approaches. For them, lasagna isn’t just a food, but a witness of their love, rage, and happiness. Watch Lasagna (2019) with us, directed by Adi Victory. Inspired by a true story, the short film criticizes death penalty.

Raise your voice in the annual Women of Words Poetry Slam where we’re seeking powerful poems exploring feminist self-reflection. Whether it’s Bahasa Indonesian, English, free verse, or rhyme – express your voice and find strength in the power of women in the spotlight.

6. Film Screening | The Science Of Fictions, 14 Oct, 19:00 – 21:00

Follow the story of Siman, a mute obsessed with space travel, who builds a rocket from scraps in his backyard hoping to fly to the moon and escape his traumatic past. The dreamlike narrative of The Science of Fictions (2019) offers a critical counter-history of modern Indonesia while asking, what happens when fact and fiction blur?

7. Book Launch | KINK, 15 Oct, 17:30 – 18:30

Join us for the launch of Ray Shabir’s KINK. This poetry collection presents an almost religious celebration of pain through the many lenses of pleasure. These intimate poems retrace his own origins of desire and interrogate his own ideas of pleasure. Through its confessional fantasies and violent sensibilities, this book offers a search for stolen desires and a longing for relief.

An unforgettable night of magic where stories unfold and the audience sets the scene. Please join in for an improvisational event where you will experience story, music, and performance. All performers will be expressing their truth through art. 

Passes to this wondrous night are limited and your ticket gets you into the story game. With each pass, you will receive a confirmation and a part of the story. Hold on to your lines, let the story unfold, and the adventure begins.

Unfold is a story experience directed by Storystation in partnership with Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.

10. Film Screening | Lokawana: The Forest And The Hustle Of Man, 15 Oct, 19:00 – 21:00

Follow the story of a forest in Jembrana, West Bali – the source of freshwater for the Yeh Embang village by joining us for the exclusive premiere of LOKAWANA: The forest and the hustle and bustle of people in it (2021), directed by Wayan Martino. This short documentary depicts the life in the forest and the hustle of those who live around it.

11. Book Launch | Bali Coffee: Origin’s New Wave, 16 Oct, 17:00 – 18:00

Origin is a place where coffee is grown. Bali Coffee: Origin’s New Wave is a story about Bali, coffee, and the spaces between. The book explores local farming and experimental processing methods and Indonesia’s first coffee flavor wheel. Learn the practical home brewing and roasting techniques, intertwined with the intergenerational journey of a Balinese coffee family with Rodney Glick and the author, Michelle Anindya.

12. Film Screening | Wild Things, 16 Oct, 18:00 – 19:15

Award-winning documentary, Wild Things (2020), follows a new generation of environmental activists mobilizing against forces more powerful than themselves through an array of non-violent tactics designed to generate mass action. Directed by Sally Ingleton, this documentary explores how today’s environmentalists are making change and aims to inspire audiences to believe in the power of individuals to make a difference.

Each year, UWRF calls out to budding writers across the archipelago: send us your stories! The most outstanding emerging Indonesian voices, selected from hundreds of submissions, are published in the annual Bilingual Anthology – a rich insight into the nation’s language, culture, history, and mythology. Join us in celebrating the launch of UWRF21 Anthology Book: Mulat Sarira.

16. Film Screening | Scraps And Hope In Banda Aceh, 16 Oct, 19:30 – 21:30

Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh (2020) examines the rebuilding of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, following the Helsinki-based peace process, 30 years of armed conflict, and the tsunami. A critical study of post-conflict politics, it explores notions of violence and grief, exiles and displacement, relationships, gender, and the relation of power and violence embedded in the peace.

Modeled after traditional Indonesian shadow puppet storytellers, Luh Ayu Manik Mas tells a story of a schoolgirl superhero who has conversations with children, experts, and elders around environmental, health, and social issues. Join BASAbali, the creator of this book, to learn more about how this courageous and strong superhero from Bali helps the fight against the pandemic.
