Michael Vatikiotis is an American writer, broadcaster and journalist who has worked in Asia for almost forty years, including as a former BBC correspondent and editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. He has written three books on the politics of Southeast Asia, including Blood and Silk: Power and Conflict in Modern Southeast Asia in 2017. With family origins in the Middle East, he has lived in Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand as well as Hong Kong. He also works as a private diplomat with the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, facilitating dialogue to help resolve armed conflicts across the region. His latest book, The Salamander's Tail, is a spy novel set along the Thai-Myanmar border.
