Go on, Show us Your Lines with Shelley Kenigsberg and Selena Hanet-Hutchins
The old adage Show Don’t Tell is enough to drive a person crazy! That is, unless they get the thrill of scenic splendour that comes from doing precisely that! This is one of the most heard about and (probably) least understood elements of writing. Join prominent editor Shelley Kenigsberg and author and editor Selena Hanet-Hutchins for this comprehensive workshop that will help you get the gist of what it is and how to apply it to your work (fiction, non-fiction, long pieces, short pieces). Is it always true that we should show not tell? Is it okay to sometimes tell what’s happened or will this just give the reader a ‘blueprint’ of the novel? How does ’Showing’ and ’Telling’ relate to scene-shaping and word choice, or dialogue? How can it help a writer craft a marketable novel or non-fiction work? All these questions will be answered ... and more.
Shelley Kenigsberg and Selena Hanet-Hutchins will also be offering their Editing in Paradise workshop from 12 - 17 October. An annual retreat, this is the brainchild of prominent editor Shelley Kenigsberg. She and colleague Selena Hanet-Hutchins developed the retreat program, tailored to developing writers — those who have completed a fiction or creative non-fiction manuscript to at least first draft — and delivered it successfully in 2009. Held in Pemuteran, northwest Bali, the program is structured over 6 days and offers individual consultations and self-editing techniques along with market awareness tools, designed to help writers recognise when they are at pitching point or how to read the feedback in reports and rejections. Editing in Paradise is designed to kick-start the writer’s own editing process, to guide experienced writers wanting to take their written manuscripts to the next stage and increase their chance of publishing success. www.editinginparadise.com.

Sex, Drugs, Love and Life: Writing Fiction for Young Adults with Daniel Ducrou
So you want to write young adult fiction? How hard is it to get published? How do I make my stories both believable and challenging? How can I improve quickly? Young adult fiction often focuses upon the pivotal moments in young people’s lives: the life changing decisions, accidents and experiences that shape the people they become. Young people are prone to taking risks and making spectacular mistakes on a variety of fronts: relationships, sex, drugs, first love, even just day-to-day living. This not only provides the writer with the key ingredients for dramatic storytelling, it also makes these characters a tremendous amount of fun to write. This workshop will equip you with a range of ideas and techniques for tapping into some of the juicier young adult subjects and bringing them to life.

Inhabiting each and every one of our created characters is essential to good writing, so in this day workshop we will learn how to write only the truth, and take authorial judgment out of the narrative, allowing the characters to breathe and come to life.
