ABOUT THE PLAYS
Oct. 8.The Trials of Brother Jero, (English language)(by Wole Soyinka) a satire that presents one day in the eventful life of con-man, and beach preacher, Brother Jeroboam.
The larger-than-life characters will delight the audience and the live African drumming accompaniment add excitement to this comedic piece.
Oct. 9.Bubat for Gusmiati Suid (Indonesian language) by Cok Sawitri and Teater Tulius Ngayah. A dramatic homage to the perseverance of the country’s single women telling the story of the late Gusmiati Suid and how the fate of a single woman divided the nation.
Oct. 10.The City Beneath (by Marco Calvani) A modern drama that explores the culture clash between civilizations. It looks, without hypocrisy at the West, our loss of humanity and our moral decline. Following a reading at La Mama, New York last year, a full production of the play is slated for Paris soon.

PROFILE
DIANA GREENTREE: After many years in music theatre (“Rocky Horror Show”, “Canterbury tales” e.g). Diana turned to straight theatre with the Melbourne Theatre Co. & Ensemble Theatre Sydney. Recent lead roles include “The Night Season” for the Melbourne International Festival. Her many film and T.V. shows include the popular soapies “Neighbours” & “Prisoner”. She was a founding member of Actors for Refugees and produced/wrote and performed this work throughout Australia from 2001-2008.

KELLIE JONES: Winner of a Green Room Award for an emerging actor and then nominee for a further Green Room Award for her role as “Inky” Kellie joins us after a successful season in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s hit, “August: Osage County” Kellie was recipient of a fellowship enabling her to train in Paris with Philippe Gaulier.After numerous roles in T.V. and film, Kellie will soon be seen in the feature film “Blessed”. She also produced and acted throughout Victoria with Actors for Refugees

LIZ RALPH: Liz Ralph caught the theatre bug after landing a role of Brigita in a high school performance of The Sound of Music. She studied Theatre Arts and Film at Curtin University, Perth, before moving to Melbourne and launching a career in documentary production at ABC Television. To satisfy passions for the arts and social justice, she stayed involved in theatre by producing shows with Actors for Refugees, a Melbourne-based refugee advocacy group. Outside her current work as a multimedia producer, she is an keen traveler, book-reader and backyard veggie gardener!

MARCO CALVANI: Marco’s plays have been acclaimed throughout Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Germany as well as London and New York. As an actor he has appeared in London’s National Theatre and in the movies of Ferzan Ozpetek among others. He is 28 and is directing this reading of “The City Beneath”.

NICKI WENDT: Well-known to Australian audiences as Penelope Porter in the soap, “Neighbours”, her career includes major roles with the Melbourne Theatre Co. including her recent starring role in “Rockabye”. Nicki has also played the lead in musicals such as “Mame’, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “42nd Street”. Her numerous television work includes dramas such as “Rush”, “City Homicide” and “M.D.A.” and feature films including “Boytown” and “Willfull”. She has had two Green Room nominations for her acting.

RICHARD PIPER: A frequent visitor to Bali, Richard co-starred last month with Nicki Wendt in “Rockabye’ at the M.T.C. His work in musicals includes “Billy Elliott” and “The New Rocky Horror Show”. His numerous t.v. roles include “Blue Heelers” and “Something in the Air”. He has worked extensively in England as well as Australia and is an accomplished musician and songwriter.

WOLE SOYINKA: Professor Wole Soyinka, Nigerian poet and playwright was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1986, the first African to receive this award. He is an outspoken critic of may Nigerian administrations and of political tyrannies worldwide including the Mogabe regime in Zimbabwe. The performers are honoured to be performing his play “The Trials of Brother Jero”.

AGUS DARMA is from Bedulu, Bali and has never performed on stage before. He attributes his ease with performing to the fact that his father is a dancer. Agus is studying English at the Putra Bangsa Vocation School, Ubud where he is in his final year. He loves to trek, to guide and to travel and would like eventually to see the world by working on Cruise ships. Hi greatest dream is to make his parents proud of him.

JOHN M. DANIELS: John M. Daniels, also known as “Jack” is the President Director of Bali Discovery Tours and www.balidiscovery.com is the only foreign national to ever receive the the Karyakarana Pariwsata Award – the highest award for tourism service be bestowed by the island of Bali.
A native of Michigan U.SA., came to Bali as a student in 1973 on a scholarship from the American University Field Staff. He is a graduate of Michigan State University where he performed in several plays. He has had a wealth of experience in radio and during his time in Indonesia has worked in the hotel, Cruise and Airline industries. He has provided the English voice for many commercials and has had roles in several Indonesian films.
