INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING FORUM

In conjunction with the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, the Indonesian Publishers Association (IKAPI), the Lontar Foundation, and the Association of Indonesian Translators (HPI), will host its second International Publishing Forum. This forum aims to bring together key players in the publishing world from both Indonesia and abroad to seek solutions to some of the challenges that beset this creative industry. The goal of this year’s forum is to establish a wider network of cooperative relationships in the book-publishing industry, especially among ASEAN countries.

English to Indonesian Translation Workshop
Wednesday 7 October

Alila Ubud
Organised by the Association of Indonesian Translators, this two-hour workshop on English to Indonesian translation will be divided into two sections, one on the role of the translator as a cultural innovator led by noted author Sapardi Djoko Damono, the other on putting translation theory into practice, led by Hendarto Setiadi. All experienced translators, but especially translators who work with major publishing companies, are invited to participate.

Publishers Roundtable Discussion

What steps can be taken by publishers, publishing organizations and governments to promote copublishing and licensing agreements among ASEAN publishers? The answers evolving from a round table discussion on this topic will serve as the basis of a lobbying paper for publishers across the region.

Unlike most international book fairs held abroad, in Indonesia book fairs are primarily devoted to the selling of books rather than the selling of rights. At this year’s Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, the International Publishers Forum will bring together approximately fifteen publishers from around the Asia-Pacific region. These publishers will be invited to “set up shop” at the Festival, thereby giving an opportunity for authors and translators to speak to publishers directly about the possibility of publishing their work.
