Monologue:
Lily Yulianti Farid’s The Kitchen (Dapur)
by Luna Vidya – Makkunrai Project
Pradha
A monologue adapted from Lily Yulianti Farid’s short story, The Kitchen. This is the story of a memory held by a woman named Kalyla, which centered on a kitchen where as a little girl she witnessed and shared lives of other two elder women, her mother and her nanny. How her life has been impacted by the two other women wounds, fears, obsessions, and values, response to religious-based conflict in Ambon and corruptions. The Kitchen is the area where values were transferred into the little girl’s life, the kitchen wooden table was a place where others’ live experiences were blend in into her life, just like what happen in the kitchen when dough is prepared for baking.
She then grows into a personality shaped and sharpened by her memories of the two beloved women. For Kalyla, the truth is there on the kitchen table where we are all dough’s of Life. We share the opportunity of ‘blending in’ with others’ life, and it gets us into what we are, who we are.
