  Newsletter

Welcome to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival newsletter for April 2008.
It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to one of our Festival colleagues this month. Peta Hanslow, our fearless volunteer coordinator, passed away March 23. Peta had been a faithful supporter of our event since 2005 and will be sorely missed. But, on the bright side, we have no doubt that with her skills she will be setting up an international writers Festival in heaven. You can only imagine what a star-studded line-up that will be!

In the meantime, the Festival office is about to get cosier with an additional staff member joining our team. The lovely Catriona Mitchell from Melbourne (that highly-sophisticated culinary mecca that happens to be my home town) will be in charge of Program development. Catriona hails from the Melbourne Writers Festival and Melbourne Film Festival and has also worked on writers’ festivals in Europe.

With our list of international writers growing, I can only say the line-up is going to be dynamic to say the least and full of lots of surprises. I am especially excited about some of the topics we will be delving into, such as crime and punishment in Asia, with sessions that will include human rights lawyers, activists and authors. There will also be a delicious food program this year that will focus on the glory of local produce and discussions on globalisation and food culture. This will be teamed with morning ricefield walks that reveal the rice-growing methods of Bali and the Subak (Bali’s ancient irrigation system) and other food-related field trips. Local and international chefs will be showing their feathers or rather caps, by serving up courses-upon-course of gourmet offerings. I personally can’t wait!

On the Indonesian front, we will be featuring a tribute to the late Sutan Takdir Alijshabana, acclaimed writer and father of Bahasa Indonesia, modern Indonesian as we know it today. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival will honour the contribution he made to the development of this language with a night of performance and readings under the stars in one of Ubud’s majestic temples.

So stay tuned for next month’s newsletter when we will start to draw the shimmering curtain on some of our esteemed guests.

Salam hangat
Janet .
